Well,
I have made it back home to Rhode Island safe and sound. Traveling
for 24 hours in the car with three cats isn't a whole lot of fun,
but overall, the trip was a smooth one!
[I'm able to
spend the winters in sunny South Florida and the summers in Rhode
Island because of the success of my home-based businesses. I appreciate
the flexibility of my businesses, and strongly encourage you to
begin your own business from home using your computer. Or, if you
already have your own Internet business that you work from home,
take it to the next level
It is very possible, and it is so
rewarding!]
I certainly
miss Florida, and I had the time of my life for the past six months!
I can't wait to go back again next winter. But at the same time,
it's really nice to be home again. Newport is beautiful
.
I have posted
a few pictures here in my journal. The one to the left was taken
on Easter (me, my cousin Ashley, and my grandfather). I have posted
more pictures below the article on this page...
I've been talking
a lot in the past month about Diversity (if you missed the articles,
you can read them in my journal at my site).
You should you
strive to have a series of *different* home-based Internet businesses.
Your first product and your first business are just the beginning.
I'm a firm believer that you shouldn't "put all of your eggs
in one basket" - especially when it refers to your income and
how you MAKE MONEY.
As soon as possible,
you should add new products, services, and promotions to generate
additional streams of income. If sales slow down for one of your
products, it is always nice to have something else in place to pick
up the slack.
With each product
and new business, I see an increase in revenues. Throughout the
past 4 years, I have learned a valuable lesson about the benefits
of multiple income streams, and I continue to build on it today.
This series
on Diversity has led to a lot of great email conversations with
my customers and subscribers. The main question that I am asked
is:
"How
do I begin to promote my business?
How do I get TRAFFIC to my site?"
I have never
relied on paid advertising for any of my home-based Internet businesses
I've used a lot of other (cost-free) marketing techniques which
I still use as the foundation of my marketing. However, I am now
beginning to add paid advertising into the mix.
Over the next
few weeks, I want to discuss both paid and cost-free ways to get
people to your site.
Let's start
with the basics:
==================================================
Pay-Per-Click Search Engines - OVERTURE
==================================================
A large percentage
of your visitors will find you via Search Engines. Pay-Per-Click
Search Engines in particular can produce quick, immediate results.
You don't have to wait weeks or months to get listed. Within a few
days, you can get your site listed at the top of numerous Search
Engines and in front of millions of web surfers. I feel that pay-per-click
search engines offer you the greatest potential search engine reach
for your dollar.
How do
Pay-Per-Click Search Engines work?
The theory behind
"pay-per-click" is that you (the web site owner) define
the search terms that you want to use for your site, and you bid
on how much you are willing to pay to have someone visit your site
if they perform a search using those specific search terms.
The best part about advertising on pay-per-click search engines
is that you don't pay anything unless you get visitors to your site,
and the only visitors you get are targeted by you.
The price you
have to bid to get listed at the top varies by search term. In addition,
you have control over placement on this Search Engine, a virtual
impossibility with traditional Search Engines.
Overture.com
is currently the largest pay-per-click search engine, and they offer
the most visibility.
Overture is
designed to provide users with relevant results for all searches,
because in order for advertisers to bid on a search term, it has
to relate to the content at their site. All sites are checked for
relevancy, and if your search term is not related to the content
at your site, they will not accept your listing under that term.
If you bid high
enough to keep your search terms in the top three positions, your
web site is in Overture's "Premium Listings." If you have
Premium Listings, your site will then appear at the top of the search
results on the Web's leading search sites including Yahoo!, MSN,
AltaVista, CNN.com, and InfoSpace.
For Example,
if someone does a search at Alta Vista, and your web site is in
the Premium Listings at Overture, then your web site will appear
at the top of the Alta Vista search results page!
==================================================
A different strategy
==================================================
As I have mentioned
before, I was on a shoe-string budget with my original business
to say the least! Having multiple search terms in the Premium Listings
at Overture can become quite an expensive proposition.
Given my limited
budget initially, I had to find another way to take advantage of
the Pay-Per-Click phenomenon.
I don't pay
a lot to bid on the more popular, general terms. These keywords
tend to have a lot of hits and can certainly drain your budget quickly.
Also, the big terms tend to be generic and attract a lot of people
who are "just looking."
Instead, I create
*numerous SPECIFIC keywords or phrases that I pay a small amount
for.*
I continue to
have luck with this effective technique. I come up with hundreds
of less-popular generic search terms that someone might type in,
and bid a small amount for each term.
With this technique,
you will often pay just pennies for targeted visitors! I'm a big
fan of Pay-Per-Click Search Engines and feel it is a wonderful way
to get traffic to your site.

The weather
isn't quite as warm, the leaves aren't on the trees yet,
but the view is still beautiful at home in Newport, Rhode Island!
